NATO's Nordic expansion: Turkish objections an 'opportunity for Erdogan' to air NATO 'grievances'
Published at : May 20, 2022
Finland and Sweden formally applied to join the NATO alliance on Wednesday at allied headquarters, a decision spurred by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, but face objections from Turkey to an accession process that is expected to take only a few weeks. Sweden's and Finland's decision to join NATO is one of the most significant changes in Europe's security architecture for decades. For analysis on Turkey's surprising resistance to NATO's Nordic expansion, FRANCE 24 is joined by Aslı Aydıntaşbaş, Senior Policy Fellow with the Wider Europe programme at the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR). Ms. Aydıntaşbaş asserts that Turkey's current stance is not just about Finland and Sweden. She describes Erdogan's move as a ploy "to get the limelight, to be heard, and to perhaps get something in return for lifting his threat of veto."
