What is the dark web?
Published at : October 08, 2021
You have likely heard of the dark web although you may have never had access to it. It’s one of the three internets ‘layers.’ But what are these three ‘layers’?
First up is the surface web, which consists of anything you can find online with a quick search on Google. Second, there is the deep web. This refers to the content you can’t find using a traditional search engine because it requires a username and a password to access. And third, we have the dark web.
So what is the dark web? This last web exists exclusively on darknets, which are networks that require specialized software or authentication to access. The dark web has the massive potential for providing users with the social good of privacy.
However, in recent years, it has mostly served those wishing to conduct illegal activity. The most egregious example of this would be the online black markets that have started popping up in the last decade that let users buy almost anything.
It’s not all bad, however, as the dark web also provides much-needed anonymity. Traditional social media platforms such as Facebook have mirror sites on the dark web, which allow users living under oppressive regimes to get past censorship blocks, and journalists host sites on the dark web so that users feel free to make anonymous tips.
What is the best way to get on the dark web? How did the dark web come to be? What do VPNs, TORs, proxies, and routers have to do with the dark web?
We answer all these questions and more in this video on the origins and current use of the dark web.
