A successful hunt often comes down to how much preparation was put in before the hunt itself. Part of that preparation should include sharpening your hunting knives. Steve joins us again in the Workshop to share some of his wisdom on what knives he uses, how to sharpen them before the hunt, and how to keep them sharp when you are out in the field putting them to use.

A sharp knife makes the task of processing game safer and easier. Before you head out on a hunt sharpen you the knife or knives you plan to use to a known angle that matches the field sharpener you plan to bring with you. This will prevent the need to reprofile that knife in the field and make that process go much faster.

The secret to keeping a sharp knife in the field is to hone often! As you are doing the work, pay attention to when it starts to getting harder to cut and take some time to hone your knife at that point. It takes less than a minute and will ensure the knife is sharp and safe for use.

When choosing a field sharpener, the important thing to remember is to have a sharpener that matches the angle of the knife you are using.

Good luck this year on your hunt!
